Continuous Improvement

This content has evolved over time, based on the fantastic feedback we have received, and to adapt to the format of the various presentation platforms we have had the pleasure of experiencing.

Version 1.0 – Using Agile to Launch and Manage your Agile Coaching Office (In-Person Workshop)

An experience talk describing an approach to using Agile to run one’s transformation, with some example resources.

  • March 28, 2018 – Denver Agile at Scale
  • April 17, 2018 – Agile Coaching Exchange

Version 2.0 – Coaching is the Product (In-Person Workshop)

An interactive workshop that outlines how to use Agile to launch-and-manage your transformation, along with several activities to help participants step-into the role of Transformation Product Owner, build and prioritize their transformation backlog, identify their key outcomes and how they will measure-and-manage toward them.

  • Sept 18, 2019 – Agile Boulder
  • Sept 20, 2019 – Agile Camp: Portland | Slides

Version 2.5 – Coaching is the Product (Virtual: Recorded Talk, Live Panel, with Audience Q&A)

Our first virtual delivery of this talk, and due to the format we were unable to present it as an interactive workshop. Instead, Tricia and John led a summarized presentation of their approach, along with downloadable resources for any participant to complete the workshop activities on their own, followed by a live panel discussion that included four transformation leaders who shared their own experiences using this approach, and answered live questions from the audience.

  • June 11, 2020 – Agile + DevOps West – the video on the homepage of this website is a recording of the first part of this presentation, along with links to all the workshop resources that were also shared. Unfortunately, Techwell did not provide us a recording of the panel discussion.

Version 3.0 – Transformation as a Product

Tricia and John continue to coach Leaders and Organizations through their Agile Transformations using these techniques, with an emphasis on Leadership Development. In 2023, we again renamed this talk for a few reasons:

  • Going back almost 5 years, Transformations were failing because they were not taking an Agile approach, and they were not supported by Coaches that could adequately support their growth and development. Prior versions of this talk emphasized Coaching as the shortcoming, but what we are observing more recently isn’t a lack of good Coaches, it’s a lack of using an Agile approach to manage the Transformation.
  • The outcome we want to focus on is not the Coaching, it’s the Transformation — if we are successful, we have transformed into what we envisioned near the outset.
  • “is the” to “as a” may seem like a trivial change, however
    • our primary audience used to be Agile practitioners, who we wanted to think about Coaching like a Product (or Service), not just “process consulting” (what so much Agile Coaching tends to be) where we train teams and judge how perfectly they did what we trained them.
    • as we bring this topic to a broader audience of business people, we must acknowledge that Transformation is a product, and the business has other Products or Services that generate their revenue. Again, it isn’t process consulting or training, but has the potential to be a value stream like other products or services.

In this latest version, with our refined focus, we are working from two angles:

  • Shorter, lightning-talk presentations of the topic and themes, and
  • a Virtual version of this workshop
